The two government agencies agreed to start enforcing this provision of the Insurance Act 2003 when they met at NAICOM Headoffice in Abuja recently.

Section 65(1) of Insurance Act provides that “Every public building shall be insured with a registered insurer against the hazards of collapse, fire, earthquake, storm and flood.”

The law provides that every public building must be insured against liability in the case of loss, damage to property, death or bodily injury that may be caused by collapse, fire, earthquake, storm or flood.

The Act defines public building as any building accessible to people for educational, medical, recreational or commercial purposes.

By virtue of Section 65 of Insurance Act 2003, public buildings include schools, hotels, hospitals, recreation centers, offices and are to be insured by their owners or occupiers against the hazards of collapse, fire, earthquake, storm and flood.

Penalty for default is a fine of N100,000 or one-year imprisonment or both.
